New Codex Entry – Dark Moons

Dark Moons are infrequent events which occur on The Ancient World during times of ruin and decay. They will usually start off relatively weak, but can become progressively more powerful over time and have even advanced into a persistent state for the world in some extreme cases where the world was blanketed in perpetual darkness and an eventual drop in temperatures – resulting in the world becoming an unforgiving frozen wasteland.

The Dark Moon is affiliated with the Undead and is a source of great strength for them. They, who would normally reside deep beneath the world or in dilapidated ruins, take the Dark Moon as a prime opportunity to continue their Ancient war against the living. The darker and longer the nights are, the more powerful the Undead become – eventually allowing them to venture out from their hiding places to seek out the living.

Notable changes to Undead mobs during Dark Moon events:

  • Undead may appear to use combat gear and can dish out more damage. They may also have many times more health dependent on their power level.
  • Undead may have a heightened sense of smell for mortals, and will seek them out from longer distances than normal.
  • It’s been documented in past events that zombies could dig through weaker blocks to reach mortals, and skeletons could shoot explosive arrows – forcing mortals to up their defences significantly or risked being completely overrun by hordes.
  • Withers are known to be affiliated with the Undead and may appear during sieges as a boss mob. Defeating the Wither may bring about the end of a siege. However, a significant amount of Undead invaders would need to be slain before the Wither would reveal itself.

When player settlements are lost to invading forces they become ruined zones that the Undead will use for their own purposes, such as a staging area for more attacks. For every settlement that is lost, nights may become longer and the undead will grow stronger. This can multiply many times over with each loss mortals sustain, until the undead become an unstoppable force that dominate the overworld in perpetual darkness. Countering Dark Moons

For living mortals to overcome this impending darkness they must take whatever measures possible to fortify their settlements against attacks. It’s recommended that this is done earlier rather than later, to avoid being overwhelmed by impossible odds. This can be done by replacing weaker blocks with stronger ones, introducing lava moats, traps, and other perimeters. Defeating the undead at their every attempt can eventually thwart their advancement as they lose power and decide to seek out other target opportunities.

The Goddess of Light

During the Age of Order a Goddess revealed herself to living mortals as Phaelle, stating she was to be their protector and guiding light through the coming darkness. Some believe that building shrines to her, leaving her offerings, and fighting in her name brings her greater strength – allowing her to assist mortals in their fight against the common enemy.

During Windvale‘s 4th Anniversary Party a ruinous event took place.

The celebration kicked off as planned. There was good music and even better drink being served by the legendary barmaster from Yvre. A toast was made in honor of Windvale and it’s 4th year Anniversary.

But then the unexpected happened..

It began with a strange rumbling deep below in the catacombs of Windvale, followed by a darkness spreading it’s way through the grand Dwarven City. Dwarven troops sprung into action, arming themselves to the teeth and supplying their visitors with their stock of emergency Rift gear. But what they were about to face was a threat The Ancient World hasn’t faced for a millennia.

Unprepared for what came next, the brave warriors of Windvale fell into a trap in the catacombs and were subsequently wiped out. The city fell into darkness and ruin as a powerful force took hold and strangled the life out of it.

The depths of the world have for a very long time been a place of refuge for undead beings of darkness.  With most of the overworld ruled by living beings of light, darkness had been suppressed into the depths of the underworld for thousands of years.

However, with The Ancient World slipping into a weighty state of entropy during The Age of Ruin, the veil which existed between the world of light and darkness weakened with every light that went out and every structure that fell into decay – allowing Ancient Foes of Darkness to climb up from deep below and assimilate what they believe to be rightfully theirs.

The Ancient Undead have returned to the surface world after a long and arduous banishment by Living Mortals. For many Ages past, the Undead have isolated themselves to the most forgotten depths of the underworld. But in their banishment, their hatred for their expulsion only grew to such a proportion it could no longer be contained. And with the overworld in it’s current weakened state, a great opportunity has risen before them where they will begin to unleash upon the world.

Arm yourself and prepare, for a primordial war of the Ancient Past threatens the world once again.

What’s here, and what’s coming?

  • An undead invasion inspired by Age of Undead has begun on TAW.
  • Night has been extended to be equal length to Day (12/12)
  • Hostile mobs may now be found in areas that were once safe.
  • Mobs will be randomly generated with different amounts of health, speed, and other stats. Be wary of a mobs level when facing them.
  • This is only the beginning. Expect mobs to evolve and change over time, with new mobs also being introduced as the invasion progresses.
  • Sieges over Faction bases are a very strong possibility once undead forces have assembled themselves and wish to turn structures into their own. Keep your lights burning bright, defences strong, and fight together if this occurs.

Windvales 4th Year Anniversary Party

The Windvale Dwarves will be hosting a celebration at their keep this Saturday the 7th at 9PM EST. All food and alcohol will be provided free! Bring just yourself and your friends for a jolly old time in the grand halls of Windvale Keep.

The Age Upon us.

Age of Ruin Date

~Synopsis~

The beginnings of Voyagers Wharf were ambitious indeed. With Lord Vaestian’s promise of a new Golden Age of Law, Order, Justice, and Commerce – TAW civilization was set to see a bright future.

But things do not always go as hoped. Over time, The Lord’s City was abandoned. The cities population dissipated as it’s once would-be citizens chose a life of banditry, villainy and wilderness pillaging over Vaestians promise of a new Age of Order.

The Lords powers diminished, the Ordinators disbanded and the magical barriers that once protected Voyagers Wharf and many other locations around the world began to disintegrate. Ships that were once used for transportation raised up their sails and set off either in search of different lands or to turn to a life of piracy. And the once vibrant city fell into disarray.

The Promise of a Golden Age was over.

Thus began the Age of Ruin.

List of Changes

Expect some of these changes when the server relaunches next weekend;

  • Server Updating from Java 1.14.4 to 1.15.2
    Be prepared for the relaunch by updating to the latest Java version.
  • Travel Network Closed
    As mentioned in the synopsis, fast travel through the use of ships will no longer be active. This includes any pre-existing portal network on the server currently. Fast travel will be limited to /spawn and /f home.
  • Spawn moved
    Spawn will be moved to the Chapel with the rest of Voyagers Wharf becoming a wilderness area. The Chapel is Vaestians final place of power.
  • No Currency or Shops
    There is no designated currency or shops in this new age. Trade will be the way to do business going forward.
  • WorldBorder Removed
    The WorldBorder that’s always kept TAW contained will be taken down for some time. You will be able to venture out beyond and generate new lands for exploration and resource gathering. With that said, we don’t recommend using these areas for anything permanent, as they will be trimmed back perhaps every few months, or until the eventual ocean expansion.
  • WorldGuard Region Cutbacks
    Many areas which are known to be WorldGuarded will have their protected status revoked – making them vulnerable to the effects of time, world events, and mortals.

TAW in 2020

As 2019 comes to a close we will be looking towards the future of TAW in 2020. Some notable changes are coming very soon, as well as many other things looming on the horizon.

The End of The Ancient “Worlds” (plural)
Beginning from the first week of January there will be a downsizing to the amount of worlds we have on offer on TAW. These worlds will be no longer hosted on the server; Creative World, Disorder World, Vanilla World, Dungeon Worlds, and Staff World. Most of these worlds were originally created in anticipation of an event that was to occur earlier in the year that never came to fruition. Without the event, they’ve seen very minimal use. Generally this is about cutting down costs as to keep TAW sustainable going forward into 2020.

Before January 7th these worlds will cease as we revert back to just a singular world. Worlds such as Creative will be available to download by request, and the Staff World will likely be hosted on a separate server or an instance within TAW so that staff may continue their work there.

This was a difficult decision for me to make, considering how many dozens of hours were spent working to make all of our worlds and systems work in sync with each other. A lot was learned, however. And hopefully one day in the future we can revisit The Ancient “Worlds” concept.

With that difficult announcement aside, there are a few great things coming to TAW in 2020 and onwards. Here are just some of the things I hope we can achieve throughout the next year.

An update to our online World Map
It’s been some time since we updated our online map render. This is due to our mapping software being out of date beyond version 1.12.2. I will be making efforts early in the year in having this updated for our purposes.

Updating to Minecraft 1.15/1.16+
It is likely we will be updating to 1.15 in the first quarter of the year. We also have 1.16 to look forward to in the near future!

The Ocean Expansion
This has been on the cards ever since the Aquatic Update was first announced. What’s held us back is the lack of 1.14 supported world editors. We are eagerly waiting for a stable release of the Amulet Editor so that the work necessary can be done. We are crossing our fingers that this tool will become available to us sometime in 2020.

Region Changing Events
Without spoiling anything, there were some region changing events planned for TAW in 2019 that didn’t yet see the light of day. These have simply been delayed, and may likely come sometime in 2020. Keep your eyes and ears open!

The Opening of a New Dungeon
Our Dungeon Masters have been hard at work these past months preparing a new dungeon challenge for you all to experience. More news will be announced as it nears it’s completion.

TAW’s 10th Anniversary
You’ve heard it correctly. July 2020 marks the 10th year since TAW’s creation. What might we do for this special occasion? We don’t have anything planned for the time being, but I think the event should be considered as a cause for celebration.

Hopefully with the addition of the Editor, an Ocean Expansion, and a World Map render update, we can have the TAW map looking better than ever for the occasion!
