What do you guys think about the removal of enchanting? This age being the least PVP focused for a long time I cannot think of a better time to make a big change such as this. The impact of doing this now will be minimal, as previous ages were largely focused around gear & war. I also believe the positive effects from this will ripple into future ages as well.. it could very well become the norm for our server.
For those of you who have been on during previous ages you’re likely familiar with the problems caused by high level enchants. They create an aggressive, unforgiving experience for new players among many other balancing issues. I know that many of you vastly prefered the earlier days when there were no enchants and we had a no diamond armor rule. Traveling the wilds wasn’t ruled by OP Prot IV diamond players. Worst case scenario you were outnumbered but you were never at a huge disadvantage because you didn’t grind 1000x hours.
Some positives I can see coming from this change:
- Ordinators & Demigods become more powerful inhabitants on the server. Currently, a Prot IV diamond armor PVPer is more combat capable than a demigod player. It’s absurd.
- It will add much value to gifts from the creator, such as artifacts & unique gear. (Yes, I plan to do something like this soon)
- Buffs from beacons & artifacts actually noticable in a combat situation
- Mobs actually a challenge again and I won’t need to keep buffing them with unstable plugins. For the last year I’ve tried to balance mobs so they are fair to new players & high level players but with no luck. It’s impossible.
- Old enchanted combat gear will be illegal to use, but old enchanted tools won’t be. This will add potential value to any old tools you save
“I honestly don’t see how you can think this is a good idea. It literally is pushing minecraft back to the pre-XP beta times pretty much. Sure you keep everything like horses but you are unable to repair items without levels or even name items which would cut out a lot of rp. Overall it is a really bad idea, enchants are now a part of minecraft and should be accepted.” -Jakeman664
Enchanting overall was a poorly thought out feature thrown into the game to give it some kind of goal or progression ladder. It’s my opinion that Minecraft is a sandbox game where we can create any kind of world we want. Just because Mojang shoves a feature down our throat doesn’t mean we have to have it in our game. This is why so many are waiting for the modding API. Players want to customize their experience.
Perhaps if The Ancient World was an anarchy server without a theme, or the theme was high fantasy, it would make sense to have enchantments in our world. But TAW has always been very dark, even more so now with Conquest texture pack. I was having a discussion earlier with Tidge and Doyl where they made the comparison between Morrowind & Oblivion from the Elder Scrolls series. If TAW was one of those, it would be Morrowind. When I see players fighting undead on the continents I imagine them wearing rusty, battle-worn iron armor, covered in molten ash & blood of their foes. Not elves wearing perfectly crafted diamond magic armor, magic enchanted bows, & cleanly washed hair.
On another note – It wasn’t my intention to remove custom item names. That is a feature I very much liked. I will see if I can find a way to bring it back without needing XP.

NOTE: I put the third option in for those who wanted it. The truth is, it’s not a practical thing to implement. At this point in time I’m only considering options #1 and #2.
I would have rather see that you did this in the start of the new age. not now its a week in.
people played on the server for a week wiith enchanting gear in mind. and i would have rather seen a longer a progresion path instead of a shorter one. if i get my house set up and my pvp/pve gear then what. diamonds are i think easy to come bye and if there not then its iron armor that is the main set and look how hard that is. all i am saying is that you would need a way to better yourself as a player and what you can do.
Better late than never. Also this would be the best time to make the change as nobody is really PVPing.
there is pvp going on.there is a lot of trouble with players getting past the pvp barier you set up my using lava and posions. we have a bandit town. that stil pvp.
am i am inplying that your pvp barier isnt working and if you remove it then pvp would begin again.
I agree with frabber, if it was implemented in the beginning i would have no problem ,but now after hours of grinding for xp only to have it be for nothing it seems unfair to the players. also since this age doesn’t have as much pvp as other ages, I don’t see the harm in enchanted weapons and armour. If it was a more pvp based age i would say they should be removed, but that is not the case. Plus enchants offer a nice role play element and also encourage some trade between playes which is a nice thing to have. Ultimately i feel that removing enchanting is a step in the wrong direction for this age, but wouldn’t be a bad change in another age. Feel free to tell me what you think!
Do you think disabling combat enchanting but keeping tool enchanting is a good compromise?
Well i asked around my town, and they like that idea. But Rybo100 offers and interesting idea, were people can’t use books to enchant which isn’t a bad idea. Personally I like the idea of no enchanting but not now when i had to grind and get good enchants. it is your decision and i am merely stating my opinion. If there is anything else you’d like to ask just let me know!
Ok so here is what I am thinking. Make it to where no one can enchant books thus making enchanting purely luck based. There would virtually be no prot 4 or sharpness 5. The only draw back to this is that people could still throw two of the same items in an anvil and upgrade it, though it makes it a lot harder to get the gear.
i completely agree with rybo100
Honestly. I have been debating to myself whether it’s a good thing or a bad thing to disable such things. I use enchantments for soul grinding and to get a better edge to kill the undead, And i also read abit on the forums of others complaining about players camping outside of towns waiting to kill people. This is when i think a new rule list comes into action. “The Common Sense board” A board dedicated to common sense, that sets forth that rule of motion, the board will have examples relating to such, I.E. Spawn camping players is strictly against rules, or doing this or that in a certain manner can get you penalized.
And also about the enchantments, Yes it does seem to op when people use it for pvp, But perhaps if you found a plugin that nerfed the enchantment system so that it becomes harder to aquire such op things.
If you insist yourself that no one is participating in a PvP manner, then why is is necessary to rid the server of enchantment freedoms? I understand your reasoning and concerns for the players who do not have the same abilities as the more experienced ones, but that also runs with other things. It is only natural that players have advantages after a longer time of dedication to the server, and playing time overall.
There are more issues that can be created from this reasoning in parallel, such as; “Why can some build ‘badass’ fortresses while I cannot?” or, “How do I the redstone?”.
If there is no problem with PvP, then there is nothing to fix.
Experience is what differs players to the core. Freedom is what allows players to differ.
Why not let players (or Ordinators) create their own shops specializing in PVP gear. The cost for enchanted items depending on how much days players have been registered. A player playing for their first 2-3 days gets a discount were as a player playing for more than 3 days pays the standard price, but still is able to also buy enchanted items. Prices vary on enchants some even costing 2k souls? (Up for debate). Leave the current system were players can enchant their own tools and just add this one I’ve mentioned to the current game. Perhaps even limit the level of a certain enchants so IV is not allowed while Protection 2 is allowed. Players can only get enchanted swords from this shop every once-twice a month (No Fire Aspect Allowed). I’m just putting this as an example It’s not perfect. I can also see economical problems in the future caused by this. It’s 3 AM and I need to go to bed…:l
P.S. Honestly the current Minecraft enchanting system is unbalanced at the moment with the ancient world and its small economy.
Drakortha, When i said nerf enchants, i didn’t mean limit how many levels you can use on picks and stuff, if possible it would be cool to see that back to normal. You guys make it so that levels are almost useless now.
